Xingu Black Neon Tetra

Remarks: The Xingu black neon tetra is new to the hobby and rarely imported. As their common name suggests, they are visually similar to the more common black neon tetra, Hyphessobrycon herbertaxelrodi, but they have a lot of differences. Unlike the regular black neon tetra that can be found in calmer waters in the more southern regions of South America, the Xingu black neon are found in the extreme rapids of the more northern Rio Xingu in Brazil. This species also remains a bit smaller and shows more color. Rather than just displaying the typical black and tan color with a blue stripe along the lateral line, they also have bright yellow belly when healthy. The contrast between the yellow and the blue looks beautiful and unique in the aquarium especially among green plants.

  As these rare tetras come from areas of high flow, it is important that they are provided plenty of aeration in the aquarium to remain healthy. Soft, clean, acidic water is also necessary. Like most tetras, Xingu black neon tetras are highly social and will become stressed if not maintained in a group of at least 6 fish with 10 or more being ideal. The larger the school, the more secure they will feel making them more likely to venture out where you can view them actively darting about the tank.
