Remarks: The tuba cichlid is a large and rare Central American cichlid native to Panama, Costa Rica, and Nicaragua. Their coloration can vary based on their locality but what is constant among all localities is the black mask on their face and the multiple black bars on their flanks. Both males and females can display tons of color upon maturity which intensifies when in breeding dress. Interestingly, their fry tend to have a rather endearing appearance with yellow bodies and black stripes resembling a bumble bee.
This species is almost never seen in the hobby as it is rarely exported and can be challenging to keep. Tuba cichlids come from fast-flowing, clear waters so they require high levels of dissolved oxygen as well as pristine water conditions to do well in the aquarium long term. An herbivorous diet is also required as too much protein can cause bloat. Sinking Cichlid Excel pellets from Hikari are a good staple with occasional soft fruits and veggies as a treat can be a good basis for feeding these fish. It should be noted that young fish will sometimes suddenly stop eating for seemingly no reason. Sometimes this can be related to issues with water quality so parameters should be checked if this occurs. Some have stated that. despite tuba cichlids being herbivores, feeding live foods such as brine shrimp can trigger their appetite again.
Tuba cichlids are a large species that usually does best when kept as male and female pairs. They require a lot of space as they can be territorial, especially when spawning. However, tuba cichlids can be kept in a community set up with other, similarly sized Central American cichlids provided they are of similar temperament, the tank is very large, and the tank is only lightly stocked. These fish are very entertaining to keep as they are highly intelligent, frequently learning who their keeper is and coming up to beg for food whenever they are around, but hiding if a stranger approaches them. This fascinating behavior and intelligence makes them plenty entertaining to make keeping them as a single fish or pair worth it. Provided all their needs are met, tuba cichlids can make fantastic, beautiful, and personable fish that can be enjoyed for up to 12 years.
