Remarks: The Towuti gold spotted rabbit snail is one of the many diverse species of snail belonging to the genus Tylomenia and one of the handful of color variants of the Towuti rabbit snail. They come from the mountain lakes and rivers in Sulawesi, Indonesia where they burrow through the soft sand or mud looking for decaying plant matter and detritus to eat. Being omnivores, they are rather opportunistic and will eat most foods offered to them. Some Tylomenia species might eat plants, but this species seems to actually completely ignore plants except for when they clean algae off them.

While many snails in the hobby prefer somewhat cooler water, the Towuti Rabbit Snails actually prefer to be kept in warmer water with the sweet spot sitting at about 82 degrees. Rabbit snails are named because of their movement strategy: They launch their head (or foot) forward, grabs hold of the substrate or glass, and pulls its long shell behind it. The name also comes from their long, droopy antennae that some fish may find irresistible so care should be taken when choosing tank mates to avoid nipping. Towuti Rabbit Snails have shells that vary in color and pattern, being anywhere from ivory to dark brown and a body that is an elegant black with gold speckles. To keep their beautiful shells intact, these snails are best kept in harder, more alkaline water with sources of minerals and calcium to feed on such as empty shells, cleaned egg shells, or tourmaline balls. If well cared for, Towuti Rabbit Snails make an excellent member of your tank's clean up crew.
