Remarks: Süsswassertang is a true oddball of an aquarium plant. It grows similarly to a moss in that it floats loosely or attaches to structures. It also has a simple structure similar to seaweed, something alluded to in its German name, Süßwassertang, which means "freshwater seaweed." Its leafy and homogenous appearance has led many to mistake it as a liverwort, but despite all of this, it is actually a type of fern according to genetic testing. It was discovered back in 2001 by botanist, Christel Kasselmann, who promptly introduced it into the aquarium hobby where it became highly desirable due to its easy care and unique appearance.
In the aquarium, Süsswassertang can be grown in a variety of ways, growing well attached to surfaces, rolled into balls, floating, or even spread out across the substrate loosely as a sort of carpet. It can adapt to almost any water parameters typically found in aquaria and will be just fine in a low light environment, but it will explode in growth if placed under high light. Propagation is achieved by simply tearing off pieces of the main plant which will grow into a new plant.
