Remarks: The slate pleco is an uncommon, but amazing species of small Loricariid native to the Rio Jaguaribe. They have dark gray or black bodies mottled with white spots similar to that of L201 making for a nice contrast. As their genus, Pseudancistrus, entails, their body shape is similar to that of bushynose, Ancistrus, plecos in that they are rather short and stout. Unlike bushynose, their bristles are present on both males and females and are fairly short. Males and females are instead differentiated by head shape with the female's being shorter and more broad compared to that of a male.
With a fairly brave and curious nature, the behavior of the slate pleco makes it all the better for aquarium life. If kept in the right conditions, you can find this species exploring every inch of the aquarium. They can prove to be a rather helpful addition to a peaceful South American community in that they are mainly herbivorous, happily feeding on any surface algae they can get to. Furthermore, unlike most Loricariids found in the hobby, they prefer warmer water and don't get very large so they pair nicely with species such as German blue rams or cardinal tetras. It should be mentioned, however, that they do not tolerate poor water quality so frequent water changes are a must to keep this fascinating pleco happy and healthy.
