Remarks:  The fenestrata cichlid is an uncommon relative of the popular synspilum cichlid with the two looking very similar. Both display similar colors such as a typically pink or red head and a green or blue body. However, what sets a fenestrata cichlid apart from a synspilum are the faint blue and red speckles on the face that are more apparent in juveniles, the black bar on their lateral line being more solid and extending to the pectoral fin rather than just the mid body, and their higher propensity toward having varied colors and patterns among individuals.

In the wild, the fenestrata cichlid can only be found in slow-moving rivers and lakes between the Papaloapán and Chachalacas rivers in western Mexico. These areas have sandy or muddy bottoms with large areas lush with aquatic plants that these fish graze on. While fenestrata cichlids are most herbivorous, they will occasionally also feed on insects and small crustaceans. This reflects the diet they should be provided in captivity, heavy in vegetable based foods and low in protein to prevent bloat. Frequent water changes and excellent filtration are also recommended as they come from areas with clear, pristine water.

Choosing tankmates for the fenestrata cichlid can be challenging as they are very large and boisterous fish that can be extremely territorial when spawning and already require at least a 90 gallon aquarium for just a pair. When kept in a community setting, they will need a tank that is at least 150 gallons with tons of structure to provide territory space and breaks in the line of sight. The best options for possible tankmates are other Central American cichlids that share their size and temperament and do not belong to the Vieja genus to prevent hybridization. Whether kept in a pair or in a Central American community setting, the fenestrata cichlid is a very fascinating fish with their beautiful colors, bold personalities, and impressive size.
