Remarks: The Cribroheros bussingi is a rare Central American cichlid, therefore not much is known about them. It is known that they are an omnivorous sand-sifter that have yellow pelvic fins used to communicate with their fry when spawning. They share these characteristics with their close relative, Cribroheros alfari. Due to this close relation, these fish should not be housed with other species of Cribroheros to avoid hybridization. They are best kept on a sandy substrate as single pairs with similarly sized Central American cichlids.

These fish are rather difficult to sex but it is reported that spawning females will sometimes have a dark spot on their dorsal fin. Females also tend to be smaller than males. Both males and females can have yellow fins, a red seam along their dorsal fins, and blue spots underneath their eyes.
