Remarks: The Congo lamprologus is an uncommon dwarf cichlid found in the fast-flowing sections of the Congo River. These fascinating little fish have adapted to withstand the fast currents of the river they inhabit with some of their adaptations being their reduced swimbladders and strong pectoral fins. Congo lamprologus are very similar to the more common buffalo head cichlids, but they are a smaller species and tend to have a more gray or tan coloration as well as a smaller size. Sometimes dominant males can have a very dark gray coloration that can appear blue in some lights making for an absolutely stunning fish.
As they are a species used to living in rapids conditions, the Congo lamprologus requires an aquarium with heavy aeration to get the proper amounts of oxygen. This can be achieved using air pumps with air stones or creating heavy surface disturbance with powerheads or wavemakers. Poor water quality also is not tolerated so frequent water changes are a must. Other parameters such as pH and hardness are fairly simple as the Congo lamprologus prefers more neutral conditions.
For tankmates, conspecifics are highly advised against as these little fish are surprisingly territorial, especially when spawning. They fiercely protect their spawning caves along with the area around it to the point they will severely injure or even kill fish that do not give their nest a wide berth. However, this does not mean the Congo lamprologus is incompatible with all fish. African tetras too large to be swallowed can make great tankmates given the tank is large enough. If the tank has a spacious footprint, smaller synodontis species could also be good candidates. If unable to provide these conditions to safely house them with other species, the Congo lamprologus is plenty entertaining on their own with their endearing personalities and fascinating behaviors.
