Remarks: The blue black-banded tetra is fairly new to the hobby, having been described back in 2006 when it was discovered in the Rio Doze de Outubro which is a part of the Rio Tapajos basin. Here, it darts in the clear waters with fairly swift currents to fight against. They are very similar in appearance to the blue ribbon tetra, Hyphessobrycon sp., with both species displaying bright blue coloration on the top half of their bodies above a thick, black, horizontal band that extends from the back of the eye to the middle of the caudal fin. What sets the blue black-banded tetra apart is its more stream-lined appearance and the striking red coloration mostly present in courting or sparring males. This mix of blue and red looks excellent against a backdrop of green plants.

This species is rather territorial with males constantly vying for dominance, and is very active. To have the most success, their habitat of fast-flowing, clear, highly oxygenated, streams should be replicated with plenty of horizontal space to swim and set up territories. These conditions are also usually preferred by most small, South American catfish, so they would be good options for tank mates. Blue black-banded tetra show behavior similar to that of barbs with them being very nippy even in regards to larger tankmates if they are not provided enough space and are not kept in large groups. Keep these fish in groups of 10 or more and tank mates with long fins should be avoided. If provided with these conditions, one will be rewarded with a truly stunning, rare fish and a more peaceful attitude.
