Remarks: Betta splendens, also known as Siamese fighting fish or domestic betta fish, have been line bred by humans for over 1000 years making them one of the oldest domesticated fish in the hobby. This line breeding has led to many different tail types, colors, and morphologies. When bettas where first introduced into the hobby they were bred and raised for fighting for onlookers to gamble on resulting in an already aggressive fish becoming even more aggressive but also very hardy compared to their wild counterparts. Male bettas are especially territorial and in general should never be kept in the same aquarium. Females should only be housed together with extreme caution and in very large aquariums with lots of hiding spots.

They have gotten a reputation as "puddle fish" due to their labyrinth organ allowing them to survive in low oxygen environments such as puddles resulting in many keeping them in incorrect conditions. In the wild, while the bodies of water bettas are typically found in are small pools or shallow swamps or floodplains, this water is constantly being refreshed either through the groundwater, rain, or flooding of larger nearby bodies of water. These conditions are not the same as the unheated, unfiltered, tiny bowls or vases many have mistakenly believed are enough for a betta. While some may survive in these conditions and they can be okay short term, a betta will only truly thrive if kept in a tank that is at least five gallons, has a heater to keep the water between 78 F and 84 F, soft decor, and an established filter.

In this listing you can select tail type only and we will select the color of fish for you. Currently we have various colors and tail types that are similar to those in the picture.

*** Please do not attempt to house these male bettas together.
