Remarks: Melanotaenia picta are naturally found in habitats consisting of small, rainforest brooks with quiet pools. These pools have excellent water clarity and stream channels composed of relatively smooth limestone with minimal aquatic vegetation, but abundant shelter for fishes in the form of log snags. To replicate their natural habitat, the tank should also be as spacious as possible, as these are fairly active fish, and they should be maintained in groups of 6 or more due to their shoaling nature.
The species name picta is Latin for "painted," with reference to its beautiful color pattern when fully mature.
